With the opinion of the international jury of the Blue Flag environmental program in 2017 edition, the Canary Islands awarded 49 beach awards, 2 more than the previous edition, 5 for the tourist ports. In the Canary Islands, the Blue Flag initiative is managed in collaboration with the Canary Islands Ministry of Health through the General Directorate of Public Health of the Canary Islands Health Service.

In total, 29 Canary Islands municipalities obtained the Blue Flag and distinguish those for beaches and marine that meet the criteria of excellence in the quality of bathing waters, meet the environmental standards and the infrastructures offered by adequate health and safety.

Gran Canaria leads the rankings with 16, followed by Tenerife with 12 prizes, 8 Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Palma with 5 each, with 2 La Gomera and El Hierro 1.
